Recent Changes in General Skilled Migration

New Migration Occupations in Demand List (MODL)–17 May 2008

There are new twelve occupations have been added to the MODL, including five Computing Professional specializations, Electronics Engineer, Optometrist and Dental Technician, and trade occupations of Binder and Finisher, Landscape Gardener and Tree Surgeon. Permission to work arrangements for student visa holders

From 26 April 2008, people granted student visas will automatically receive permission to work with their visa grant. Most student visa holders will no longer need to apply separately in Australia for permission to work.

Changes to the General Skilled Migration Programme

Changes to the General Skilled Migration programme (GSM) will be introduced on 1 September 2007. People who have made an application for a skilled visa on or before 31 August 2007 will not be affected by the changes.

New Essential Skills work policy for overseas workers effective 28 July 2008

The New Zealand Immigration Services is introducing a new temporary work policy for overseas workers to protect lower-skilled local workers and encourage the recruitment of high-skilled overseas workers. The new Essential Skills policy will replace the current General work policy from 28 July 2008, and will see applications for work permits in lower-skilled and higher-skilled occupations treated differently.

The Immediate Skill Shortage List (ISSL) and the Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) of NZIS have been amended. The changes will take effect on 28 July 2008.

To help temporary foreign workers and foreign student graduates – August 12’ 2008

Canada’s Government to help temporary foreign workers and foreign student graduates become permanent residents

The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today announced the details of the Canadian Experience Class, a proposed new avenue for immigration for certain temporary foreign workers and foreign student graduates with Canadian work experience. Unlike other existing programs, this proposal will allow an applicant’s Canadian experience to be considered a key selection factor when immigrating to Canada.

“The Canadian Experience Class is one more measure this government is proposing to make our immigration system more attractive and accessible to individuals with diverse skills from around the world, and more responsive to Canada’s labour market needs,” said Minister Finley. “This new proposed avenue for immigration would also go further to spread the benefits of immigration into smaller centres across Canada.”
